The stars came out for the kids at the 4th Annual Keeping the Promise to our Children conference in Washington D.C. this week.

Celebrities like Vivica Fox, Terrence Howard and Gabrielle Union and David Archuleta got an early start by participating in the day’s opening press conference on June 9. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi moderated a Q&A session.

After that the day was broken up into six different panel discussions, each of which focused on different problems facing children today. Audiences could sit in on talks about anything from childhood obesity to economic decline to mental health. There was also a discussion on student loan forgiveness in exchange for becoming an academic mentor.

The all-day event was sponsored by Children Uniting Nations. Russell Simmons said that it was important for his Hip-Hop Summit Action Network to co-sponsor the conference because he feels that country needs to be reminded of the fact that its youth is in serious  need of guidance.

“Children Uniting Nations is one of the most effective organizations of our time, and our partnership will help raise public awareness about the key public policy issues that focused on empowering children to have a better quality of life,” Russell Said. “[The conference] will enable more people to make a real difference on these important issues.”
