"Community" star Donald Glover is taking his rap career to the next level with a new recording contract.
Donald announced at a recent concert in Los Angeles that he has just inked a deal with Glassnote as his hip-hop alter ego Childish Gambino. The indie rock label will officially release his next album Camp on November 1.
The actor-comedian started making a lot of noise in last year when he covered Drake’s "Over" at a show in June. He followed that up with a video for his track "Freaks and Geeks," which samples from Adele’s "Melt My Heart."
Since then, Donald has performed at Bonnaroo Music Festival and on the Rock the Bells tour. His sound confirms that Kanye West isn’t the only Black nerd that can rap. Donald keeps listeners on their toes by switching his voice between warbley rhythms and grittier tones, so you’re not sure which side of Donald you’ll be hearing from line to line.
As a bonus a quick view through Donald’s Vimeo channel reveals that he’s got a halfway decent falsetto voice for singing!
Donald has released several mixtapes and EPs via his blog, but Camp will be sold in a variety of formats (including vinyl).
This news comes on the heels of Donald taping his upcoming special for Comedy Central, "WEIRDO." To get an idea of his flow, check out the video for "Freaks & Geeks" below.
