Nia Long wanted another baby so much that she took it up with a higher power.
“I honestly asked God for this." Nia told Ebony magazine, explaining that she sent up the prayer after learning that she may not be able to have any more babies. She called up her boyfriend, Ime Udoka, with the potentially crushing news.
“I remember I was driving home from the doctor, and I called Ime," she said, "and I was like, ‘Babe, I’m really kind of sad right now … the doctor actually said if I wanted to have more children, it would be hard.’”
It didn’t take long for Ime to go into support mode and lift Nia’s spirits. “The next time [Ime] came to visit, he said, ‘I don’t believe that,’" Nia recalled. "I said, ‘You don’t?’ He said, ‘No.’ And I said, ‘Good, me neither.’ Then I got pregnant.”
Nia already has a 10-year-old son named Massai Jr., but she took the time to give hope to other unwed women in their 40s who want kids. The actress said that women should forget how the world tells them things are supposed to go, choosing instead to do what is right for them.
“The medical [profession] tries to tell every woman, ‘Have your babies before 40 because you shouldn’t have children after 40,’” Nia said before mentioning another pressure that is placed on women. “Society tells us, ‘Get married before 30 because no man wants a woman after 30.’”
She continued, “You are not half the woman you’re gonna be until you turn 30. You’re not even half of that woman yet. So I think if we’d just take our time as women, and do what comes natural to us and for us, we would make fewer mistakes.”
