Chris Rock was inspired by his daughters (he’s got two: Lola, 6, and Zahra, 4) to take a close look at the African-American hair industry and the relationship between Black women and our hair in his new documentary Good Hair.
During a clip from the Sundace Film Festival’s "Meet the Artists," Chris explains, "I’ve always been taught that girls that have esteem problems; it’s always the result of not getting enough love. My daughter, who I tell is beautiful constantly, tells me she doesn’t like her hair. And that just got me thinking about combining the two things and making a movie about hair and the hair industry."
In what has become a trademark for him, Chris makes a whole lot of sense and manages to put a new spin on an age-old topic. Chris aims to show that Black women are up against an overwhelming set of odds when it comes to loving ourselves, and that the answers may really lie on the other side of that hot comb.
