Kanye West, Beyoncé and Jay-Z topped the list of BET Award nominees for the 2012 ceremony.
Set to air on July 1, viewers will have to tune in to see if Kanye will pick up all seven of his potential awards. He collected the most with Beyoncé and Jay-Z following his lead.
The dynamic trio has the odds in its favor and it’s likely that each will pick up a handful of awards.
With all the hot singles from The Throne and 4 albums, there is no wonder that Beyoncé picked up six noms and Jay-Z picked up five.
Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials, BET Networks, also announced that Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will be honored with the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award.
Nicki Minaj, who is nominated for Best Female Hip Hop Artist was named to perform as well as Chris Brown, who was last year’s big winner of the night. “We have more acts to come,” Stephen promised.
Stephen also took to Twitter to assure fans that an appropriate Whitney Houston tribute is in the works.
The network caught some flack following the death of Michael Jackson for a tribute that some found less than adequate. However, Michael died just days before the live event. BET has had months to prepare something for Whitney.
“The BET Awards tribute to Whitney WON’T include ‘IWALY,’ tweeted Stephen. “JHUd tore that down in front of her at ’10 BET Honors. We’ll do it differently.”
Another thing that’s different is this year’s host. Past award shows have been hosted by Mo’Nique, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart to name a few. This year, the network tapped “one of the hardest working actors in Hollywood,” Samuel L. Jackson.
“We’re just getting started and already the show is living up to its slogan: it’s too big to miss,” Stephen said in a press release.
