Newly engaged Alexis Welch wants the world know she’s more than just Amar’e Stoudemire’s fiancée. For those who weren’t aware, she’s the mother of his three children and his girlfriend of 10 years.
The twosome met in 2002 at the ripe age of 19. She said they were in a private room at a Nelly after party in Phoenix. He had been drafted right after high school and was playing for the Suns.
“Since we were both 19, they put us in a private room in the back of the club. He was wearing a Kansas City Chiefs Joe Montana jersey—I’m originally from there, so we started talking about Montana when he played there,” Alexis told The New York Post.
Alexis said she always liked guys who were taller than her 5-foot-10 frame. Needless to say, Amar’e made the cut standing at 6-foot-11. Since they were both still young, she said they went to a lot of movies together and would just spend time together and talk.
Now, they’re past the talking stage. On the last night of the couple’s romantic vacation in Paris last week, Amar’e showed his romantic side and popped the question with a million dollar 8.5-carat radiant-cut diamond ring in their penthouse suite that overlooked the Eiffel Tower.
Can you say romantic?
“I’m usually on top of everything, but he got me. We were going to France to visit Cognac [area]. We went back [to the room], and there were rose petals leading to a balcony with a 365-degree view of Paris. We walked out to the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower. He had an acoustic-guitar player. He had a saxophonist. This is another side of Amar’e that people don’t get to see,” she said.
Amar’e even hired a photographer to capture their magical moment, and after she said the three-letter word his ears were waiting to hear, he tweeted:
“Paris, the food, & lights were very romantic. When she said yes, it was surreal. I’m still floating. #engaged #blessed.”
Ever since Amar’e got traded to the Knicks in 2010, the couple has been continuing their relationship long-distance. Alexis and their three cubs: Ar’e, Assata and Amar’e Jr. have been living in Miami, but now she’s planning to pack up her life and join her hubby-to-be in New York.
Alexis admitted to the Post that she still has the Montana jersey that Amar’e wore when they first met back in 2002 and said she’s planning on getting it framed for their house.
Although there hasn’t been a date set yet, the twosome plan to marry in 2013.
“I’m marrying my best friend,” she said.
