An 18-year-old Georgia man remains in custody after allegedly stabbing his mother to death on Monday.
The suspect, Damian McElrath (pictured), is charged with the aggravated assault and murder of his adopted mother Diane McElrath, 58, who was fatally stabbed at her home Monday afternoon.
Damian called 911 and was waiting when police arrived. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Diane adopted Damian 16 years ago when he was a toddler and has had a history of trouble with him, said Gwendolyn Williams, who described Diane as her best friend.
“He has threatened her time and time again, told her he was going to kill her,” Gwendolyn said. “I’ve asked her, I have begged her and I have talked with her—even last night we talked, and she said she couldn’t turn her back on him because she raised him.”
Diane has another son who arrived to find police cars at the home on Monday, family members said.
Police have responded to other calls to the McElrath home, but officers would not go into detail of the nature of the calls.
“She loved him. She loved him,” Gwendolyn said in regards to Diane’s feelings toward Damian. “She loved him to the bitter end.
