Teen models Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman spill the beans on everything from motherhood (Jourdan’s preggers) to Black girl rivalry.
Supermodels Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn cover this month’s Teen Vogue magazine, and they couldn’t have picked a better time. Both girls walked in many of the high-profile designer shows for last month’s New York Fashion Week, while Jourdan recently revealed that she’s expecting her first child this winter.
They seemed friendly during the interview, but both were quick to explain that that hasn’t always been the case.
"I could sit here and tell you, ‘I love Jourdan! We’ve always been the best of friends!’" Chanel explained. "But we haven’t. Until recently, we barely even spoke. We went from being super-close in the beginning to dead silence if we saw each other backstage at a show."
"It’s competition," Jourdan co-signed. "There aren’t a lot of us, but instead of sticking together, we’re pitted against each other. People will say things in Chanel’s ear like, ‘Jourdan is taking your spot,’ and then they’ll say to me, ‘Don’t trust Chanel.’"
And, naturally, the pressures of being a Black women are rough, they dished.
"You’re being told, ‘So and so is only booking one black girl. It’s either you or Jourdan,’" Chanel told TeenVogue. "So we’ll be sitting in the lobby looking at each other like, ‘Okay, I want this job, and she wants it too. Which one of us is going to get it?’"
"I remember last season I was about to go into a casting, and my agent phoned and said, ‘Turn back. They decided they don’t want any black models,’" Jourdan recounted. "I was like, ‘They’re actually telling you that’s the reason? Are you serious?!’"
The models reconciled on a recent photoshoot for Vogue magazine. "We said, ‘Why are we fighting? It doesn’t make any sense,’" Jourdan told the magazine. And, in fact, when the 19-year-old found out she was having a baby, Chanel was one of the first people on her to-call list.
"It was really hard," Jourdan admitted. "All I could think about was what my mom was going to say, my agency, my boyfriend. When I told my mom, she started crying and blaming herself. She got pregnant with me at the same age, and she said, ‘I don’t want you to have to go through what I did.’"
But while Jourdan, who’s expecting her son in December, may have to take a break for motherhood, Chanel doesn’t expect to have that responsibility for a loooong time.
"No babies for me until I’m in my 30s!" Chanel, who is also 19, said. "I’m focused on my career right now. I can’t even take care of my dog." Her two-year old puppy in stuck in Los Angeles with her mother, while Chanel is based in New York.
