Many questions loom over the shooting death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter. Police allege that Chavis shot and killed himself. One problem: He was in handcuffs in the back of a police squad car.
ABC-affiliate KAIT reports that Chavis was a passenger in a truck that was pulled over. Officers found an outstanding warrant out of Mississippi and also found marijuana on his person.
After searching Chavis, a Jonesboro, AR resident twice, police officers handcuffed him and put him in the back of their squad car, where they allege that moments later they heard a “thump” and discovered what they proclaim to be a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the right temple.
According to http://www.kulturekritic.com, Chavis’ mother denied any notion that her son was suicidal and claims that the young man had called his girlfriend just prior to his arrest to let her know that he would be calling her from jail.
Chavis’ mother also noted that her son was left-handed, making it even more suspicious that the gunshot wounds would wind up on his right temple.
The incident falls right on the heels of the heavily publicized shooting of an unarmed man by police in Anaheim, CA. That incident, which is still being investigated, resulted in rioting and unrest in the Disney capital of the west coast.
The Huffington Post reports that police have launched an investigation into the incident in hopes of finding out what really happened. The two arresting officers have been placed on administrative leave for the time being.
