Wesley Snipes is in hot water for sneaking out to attend a party in Dubai.
The Associated Press reports that the Blade trilogy star flew to an extravagant $20 million party to celebrate the opening of an Atlantis Hotel resort in Dubai last November.
Wesley was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion in 2008. He’s free on $1 million bond pending an appeal, but he can only travel abroad for work. Last year a federal judge allowed him to go to Bangkok to film Chasing the Dragon.
Federal prosecutors filed a motion against Wesley, claiming he violated that arrangement by flying to the lavish party. The actor had just asked for clearance to travel to Africa next month to shoot scenes for Gallowwalker.
"Defendant Snipes abused the Court’s trust, and did so in a very public way," the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated in court papers filed Tuesday. "For that reason alone, the Court should deny his current request for international travel."
Wesley’s lawyer, Daniel Meachum, said that the actor should be allowed to travel anyway. He argued that completing the project would allow Wesley to earn some more money that would go to paying off his tax debt.
We hope the party was worth the 2,000-mile excursion from Thailand to Dubai and all the legal drama that came along with it. Maybe Daniel can make the trip look like a networking opportunity.
