‘Star Trek’ beams up to top spot

Star Trek had some stellar sales this weekend and advanced to the head of the fleet at the box office.

The movie, starring Zoe Saldana and Tyler Perry, grossed more than $72.5 million this weekend. That includes the $7 million it raked in by 5 p.m. on opening day.
Audience members we spoke with haven’t been able to stop raving about Star Trek all weekend, and we saw more than a few people reference it in their Facebook status, too.
True trekkies noted that J.J. Abrams left room to retell the entire story of James T. Kirk and his crew because the movie totally flips their history. However, that doesn’t seem to bother some fans.
With ticket sales of $27 million, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was bumped to second place this weekend. Will. I. Am. of the BlackEyedPeas plays John Wraith, a small part that he still delivered with style.
Next Day Air starring Mos Def, Donald Faison and Mike Epps didn’t do nearly as well among moviegoers this weekend. It made about $4 million debuting at #6 on the list.
