Shawne Merriman denies choking

Shawne Merriman of the San Diego Chargers said this weekend’s incident with Tila Tequila was a misunderstanding.
New York Daily News reports that the reality TV starlet made a citizen’s arrest after her NFL beau allegedly choked her and pushed her to the ground when she tried to leave his place Sunday.  But Shawne insists that he was actually trying to save Tila, who he claims was too drunk to get behind the wheel.
"We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety," he said in a statement. "At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided."
Meanwhile, Tila is telling a different story on
Twitter and she said there’s no way she could have been drunk.
“I am allergic to alcohol. It has been publicly known for years. That is how I got the name Tila ‘Tequila’ cuz the irony. I can’t drink,” she explained. Those may be some of the only statement she’ll issue on the matter because her attorney said she won’t be issuing any further comment on the matter.
Of course, if you let Shawne’s lawyer Todd Macaluso tell it, it’s her word against the athlete and his guests’.
"There was absolutely no wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Merriman," he told the Associated Press."He essentially was doing what was appropriate under the circumstances in trying to protect the safety of Miss Tequila. There were numerous eyewitnesses that will support his version of the events that transpired at his home."

After the alleged altercation, Shawne was taken into custody early Sunday morning, but he was released about seven hours later on $58,000 bail. The athlete was charged with battery and false imprisonment.
