Hours of rigorous rehearsals paid off as Janet Jackson presented her tribute to her brother Michael last night at the VMAs.
MTV took some time to remember Michael Jackson at the beginning of the Video Music Awards Sunday. The ceremony kicked off with a speech by Madonna, another MTV icon, who remembered Michael as a king. “But he was also human,” she reminded the crowd while recounting her brief friendship with Michael.
At the close of her eulogy, Janet’s tribute, which we’d been hearing about all week finally began with a retro MTV clip that segued seamlessly into the dance number from Thriller. Up unti then, we weren’t sure what to expect from Janet’s performance, but we were more than pleasantly surprised when she came out to do her duet with Michael, “Scream.”
One dancer reportedly said that rehearsals for that number would sometimes run as along as 15 hours a day, and we see that not a second of that time was wasted as everyone pulled off Michael’s moves with precision. And Janet’s voice came through with such power.
And, in the audience to witness the tribute were Joe and Jermaine Jackson.
