Josh Xantus makes his mark

R&B newcomer Josh X is composing his musical legacy like a maestro. Not only does the Juilliard-trained pianist write his own music and lyrics, he’s orchestrated the ideal label situation: Bypassing the majors who were bidding for a piece of his promise, he joined with a family friend to form M USA, an indie distributed by EMI.

We caught Josh, a former classmate of Chrisette Michele’s, live at New York’s S.O.B.’s. It was the “First Time” singer’s second performance there in a month, and the young boss happily chatted up fans and tastemakers before his show. Then he tickled the ivories and sang with a backing band—skills he fine-tuned from nights on the road opening for Ne-Yo.

Check out these pics from Josh’s S.O.B.’s Listening Lounge. Then watch Josh’s video “Let’s Ride,” featuring Jadakiss, from his forthcoming debut, Can I Live.
