Solange talks locks

Solange Knowles said shaving her head was a liberating experience that let her focus her energy elsewhere.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the singer said that her addiction to keeping her tresses in check began at an early age. Solange revealed that she got her first relaxer at the age of 4.
Over the years she transitioned from relaxers to weaves and wigs, and her self-perception became closely linked with the length of her locks. “I felt like when I took my weave out I wasn’t as pretty, I wasn’t as noticeable,” Solange said.
And Solange did the math of maintaining her enhancements, estimating it at about $40,000 – $50,000 a year. However, the biggest investment she made to her follicular upkeep was her time.
“You are submitting yourself to your hair,” she explained. “Everything becomes like a schedule. You have to think about your hair.”
“I’m free,” Solange added. “This is a phase where I’m like, ‘I can’t deal with [my hair].’ Not to say three years later I’m going to want that straight hair down to my behind again.”
