Trend alert: Winged eyes

Rihanna and Leona Lewis showed at the 2009 American Music Awards in bold, winged eye makeup. Remix the trend with our tips!

If songstresses Rihanna and Leona Lewis’ bold eye makeup at the 2009 American Music Awards was any indication, winged eyes will be a big trend in the seasons to come.

Rihanna wore hers with deep shade of pink (something of a trademark for the young fashionista, no?) while Rihanna went for smokey black.
While it may seem a bit bold, it could be the perfect added ta-da for any holiday party or a night out with the girls. The way to keep it from overpowering your face is to make  everything else really simple: Both Rihanna and Leona did nude lips.

Get the look by lining both your upper and lower lash line with dark eyeliner. Choose one color and get two shades of itfor example, you can paid a deep, rich color and then a lighter complement).
Sweep the lighter version across your top lid, all the way up the crease of your eye. Use an sponge tip applicator brush to line your lower lash line with the darker shade, similar to the way that you would apply eyeliner to the lower lid but with a thicker line.
Draw a thin line from the outer crease of your eye, stopping when your "wing" is level with the top of your lid. For a classic look like Rihanna’s, stop with the thin line. For Leona’s smudged look, apply more of the darker shade with an eyeshadow brush to create a fuller effect.
Finish off with a few coats of dark mascara to both the upper and lower lashes.
