Tiger Woods won’t be playing at the Chevron World Challenge golf tournament because of injuries he sustained after his SUV crash.
The Golf Pro expressed his regret for having to back out on the competition set to start later this week, stating via his Web site, "I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week … I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I’m very sorry that I can’t be there."
This absence marks the first of many no-shows for the rest of the year: It was announced that Tiger won’t compete again until 2010. The golf star’s reps claim he’s taking a break due to injuries he sustained during last week’s accident at his home in Windmere, Florida.
According to TMZ.com, Tiger hit a fire hydrant and then his neighbor’s tree as he was pulling out of his driveway early Friday morning. There’s speculation that the accident occurred during a hasty retreat from his home after his wife, Elin Nordegren, confronted him about rumors that he was having an affair.
Authorities say that after the crash, Elin broke one of the windows on Tiger’s Escalade in an attempt to free her husband. However other sources claim that Elin was actually chasing him with a golf club and swinging it around.
But no matter which version of events is true, an witness claims that Tiger was lying unconscious on the ground by the time emergency crews arrived. They say the golfer busted his bottom lip, which was pretty bloody.
