One Cleveland newspaper is in trouble because of an editorial comic it recently ran.
The Associated Press reports that the Call & Post, a Black-owned weekly paper, published a cartoon of Democratic Sen. Nina Turner that portrayed her as Aunt Jemima speaking in broken English.
While many Black readers feel the caricature is racist, the Call & Post insists that it is not meant to be offensive. It argues that the cartoon is supposed to be a criticism of Nina, who supported a ballot to rework Cuyahoga County government. Many in the Black constituency are concerned that the overhaul would reduce their political power.
According to HipHopWired.com, that Nina is the only Black official to support the measure, which is called Issue 6.
