Solange, Kerry Washington and Tichina Arnold demonstrate how to make the best of fall’s hottest lipcolor: bright pink.
This has been the year of really bold beauty colors: bright nails, winged eyes and, now, pink lips. Everyone’s sporting the uber-trendy fall and winter look, even some of our favorite African-American celebs. Many of us shy away from bright lipcolors in fear of looking cartoonish, but we can rock the look too.
Whether you want a pale pink like Solange, a berry shade a la Kerry Washington or that full-on hot pink like Tichina Arnold, the key to wearing pink is layering.
Beauty blogger Brittany of ClumpsofMascara.com recommends pairing pink shades with a darker lipgloss with hints of burgundy to create a wearable shade.
Sam Fine, celebrity makeup artist to everyone from Vanessa Williams to Jennifer Hudson, also recommends blending pink to lesson the shock value. "Use a brown lip pencil first," he told BlackVoices.com. "This will add a little bit more pigment to the lip, which is usually lighter that our skin. It will make the shade more consistent by giving it a little base."
When it comes to choosing the actual pink, go for pigments that have warm undertones as these will look better on your skin. This might also be an excuse to splurge on a department store brand, as you’ll need to try on a few colors to be sure they look good with your skin.
