Bryant Gumbel, who famously hosted "The Today Show," admitted that he had surgery to treat lung cancer, Black America Web reports.
The current host of HBO’s "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" broke the news to the crowd on "Live! with Regis and Kelly" yesterday when he filled in for Regis.
"They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung and some other goodies," Bryant told co-host Kelly Ripa. "The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign, but enough aggressive cells escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment."
Bryant also revealed that he had previously not discussed the condition because he wanted it to remain private, but told his temporary co-host backstage so that she would know why he couldn’t perform in a dance segment for "Live!" Bryant’s meeting with his doctors next week, at which time he hopes to get a clean bill of health.
Bryant’s staff at "Real Sports" were also clueless to their boss’ condition because he continued to film episodes, not missing a show between September 15 and October 27.
"We hope," he said. "We hope it’s over."
