It took a few tries, but Caressa Cameron has been crowned Miss America.
Caressa, aka Miss Virginia, took home the title in Las Vegas on Saturday, beating out 53 other girls clamoring for the crown. The beauty queen also won a $50,000 scholarship, which should come in handy for her.
The newly crowned Miss America, a mass communications major at Virginia Commonwealth University, competed on a platform of AIDS awareness. And it didn’t hurt that she brought down the house with her rendition of “Listen” from Dreamgirls.
This win makes Caressa the first Black Miss America since Ericka Dunlap won in 2005. The honor was a long time coming for Caressa who admitted on “Live! with Regis and Kelly” that she had actually competed to be Miss Virginia three times before finally snagging the title last year.
Claiming the crown this year is the richly deserved reward for her persistence. “You can become anything that you want to be, even Miss America,” Caressa told the Associated Press.
So what does she want to be when her reign ends? Caressa has stated that she would like to work in broadcast journalism as a TV news anchor.
