Allen Iverson’s wife files for divorce

Allen Iverson’s wife is leaving him after more than eight years of marriage.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Tawanna Iverson filed for divorce in Fulton County Superior Court on Tuesday, claiming that their marriage is “irretrievably broken.” She’s seeking both temporary and full custody of the children she raised with the NBA player. The five kids are between 17 months old and 15 years of age.

Tawanna is also seeking an unspecified amount of child support and alimony.  This news comes just a week after Allen announced that he was taking indefinite leave from the Philadelphia 76ers to look after the couple’s 4-year old daughter, Messiah, who is suffering from an undisclosed ailment.

Allen and Tawanna have had a tumultuous relationship, including a 2002 domestic dispute that had him facing 14 criminal charges.  The couple had been arguing for days when he allegedly tossed her out on the street.

Despite their troubles, the pair managed to stay together until Tuesday, when Tawanna requested the split. It was the exact same day that the Sixers announced that Allen would not be sitting out for the rest of the season.
