The top military official in Iraq said the president plan for troop withdrawal is proceeding as scheduled.

The Associated Press reports that Gen. Ray Odierno confirms that 45,000 soldiers will have left Iraq by the end of August unless a dramatic security concern arises in the area.

There are currently 95,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. “I fully expect us to be at 50,000 by the first of September,” Gen. Odierno said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding that al-Qaida is degrading in Iraq.

This withdrawal is the first leg of an exit agreement with Iraq, which aims to have all U.S. soldiers out of the area by the end of 2011.
