Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has been named NBA’s top defensive player for the second year in a row.

The Associated Press reports that Orlando’s big man was given the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award for a second consecutive season. Not many can disagree with this news; Dwight has led the NBA in blocks and rebounds for the past two years.

According to The Los Angeles Times, NBA statistics show that only four players in history (Bill Walton, Kareem Abdul- Jabar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Ben Wallace) have ever held leading positions in those categories in a single season. Howard is averaging around 13.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks a game so far this season.

Stan Van Gundy, Orlando’s head coach, spoke highly of the 23 year old honoree as he accepted the award Tuesday.

"I think it’s a well-deserved honor." He’s the most impactful defensive player," Stan said.

Dwight Howard has been on a steady pace so far in his career. He has led the Magic to a 59-23 record as they advance on through the remainder of the season.
