BET is pleased to add Prince to the pantheon of highly respected artist to receive its top honor.
This beats the hell out of diamonds and pearls and purple rain! The network has announced that Prince will receive the BET Lifetime Achievement Award on June 27 at the Shrine Auditorium.
As usual, the presentation will be made during the BET Awards, which will be hosted by Queen Latifah.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is an accolade bestowed on only the most iconic, influential performers in the music industry. Past honorees include Gladys Knight, The O’Jays, Chaka Khan, James Brown and Whitney Houston.
According to BET, Prince’s body of work made him a natural choice for the award.
"We are humbled that Prince will be our lifetime achievement award recipient," said Stephen G. Hill, President of Programming, Music and Specials. "Genre smasher, virtuoso musician, one of the most emotional singers of all time; words are too weak to describe just what he means to our culture. We have a different kind of tribute planned for him as his unique style deserves a unique honor. Prince is dynamic. Prince is genius. Prince is music."
This news may come as a surprise to those that thought the award would undoubtedly go to Michael Jackson, who died suddenly just days before the 2009 BET Awards.
