You can take this one to the bank, Ice Cube! After his last few films tanked, the rap legend gets back on track with Lottery Ticket.
You can take this one to the bank, Ice Cube! After his last few films (The Long Shots, First Sunday and Janky Promoters) tanked, the most recent one amidst beef with notable studio bosses Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the rap legend gets back on track with Lottery Ticket.
The film is about a sneaker-obsessed kid named Kevin Carson, played by Bow Wow, who lives in the projects and works at Foot Locker. He lives in the projects and is trying to survive the three-day 4th of July weekend after the entire neighborhood finds out he’s holding a winning lottery ticket worth $370 million.
Lottery Ticket boasts a hilarious all-star cast, including Brandon T. Jackson, Loretta Devine and Charlie Murphy. Ice Cube heads up the supporting cast as Mr. Washington. Naturi Naughton, Mike Epps, Teri Crews, Jason Weaver, T-Pain and Keith David round out the film’s roster.
Bow Wow and his supporting cast are seasoned actors and get the job done. But, it’s Brandon who steals the show as Benny, Kevin’s best friend. Ever since Jackson’s breakout role in Tropic Thunder along side A-list mega stars Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller, Brandon has been on a lot of people’s radar around Hollywood. He is definitely a star in the making and it’s apparent on screen in the scenes that he and Bow Wow share.
R&B star Teairra Mari has a small but memorable role as the very sexy groupie Nikki Swayze, who has dated every baller from Jay-Z to Lebron James. Now she’s after Bow Wow to impregnate her after she finds out he won the lottery.
Ice Cube stretches his acting chops playing the unconventional character Mr. Washington. Mr. Washington is a retired boxer, who sparred with some of the greatest boxing names in history but never got his chance at the big dance. And we have to give props to first-time film director Erik White, who does a great job at moving the story along. In most films Ice Cube produces, there is a signature character, and in Lottery Ticket that’s the menacing bully Lorenzo, playe by Nigerian actor Gbenga Akinnagbe. He terrorizes the neighborhood in a way that reminds us of Tiny Lister’s role as Debo in the Friday franchise.
Although Lottery Ticket has its share of clichés, overall, we enjoyed it. It’s arguably Ice Cube’s best movie since the first Barbershop. The comedy has heart, lots of laughs, deals with love and makes you think long and hard about what you would do with the money if you ever got filthy rich.
