Kirk Whalum honors Donny Hathaway

Kirk Whalum is paying tribute to soul singer Donny Hathaway with a new CD.

Kirk, a tenor saxophonist, is taking on Donny’s influential sound with Everything is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway.

The album features a number of guest appearances, including a rendition of  “You Had to Know” by Donny’s daughter, soul singer Lalah Hathaway.  And R&B crooner Musiq Soulchild covers the bittersweet ballad “We’re Still Friends.”

However, the track “Je Vous Aime” holds special meaning for Kirk, who said, “As I played I thought both of how precious it is to have someone who loves you enough to ‘stand by your side,’ as my wife Ruby has done for me. When you sum up what it means to be ‘alive,’ it means family and community.”

To hear those cuts and others, pick up Everything is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway when it drops on August 31.
