Patti LaBelle is adding her talents to the Tony-Winning musical Fela!
The legendary diva has announced that she’s joining the cast of Fela, which is produced Jay-Z, Will Smith and his wife Jada-Pinkett Smith. The show is only running runing until January 2011, but we can’t be mad at Patti for being tardy to the party.
According to the singer, she’ll be playing the role of Fela Kuti’s mother, starting September 14. Patti revealed in a statement that she considers it an honor to take up the part.
“Fela’s mother, Funmilayo, was a strong, truly inspiring woman and I am so privileged to be able to pay tribute to her on the Broadway stage,” she said.
"I am both thrilled and honored to be joining the cast of FELA!” Miss Patti added. “After seeing the show, I was struck by the choreography and work of Bill T. Jones, and the passion and joy that overflows from the stage.“
