Claude Kelly writes Fantasia’s soul

Songwriter Claude Kelly is the man behind Fantasia Barrino’s latest hit “Bittersweet” and he told us about how it came to be.
“Bittersweet” is a slow ballad about how hard it can be to let go of a relationship, even when it isn’t a great one.  In the song, Fannie’s going back and forth over her feelings for a man that she cut loose.
Given Fantasia’s on-again-off-again relationship with a married man named Antwaun Cook, many were curious about the song’s inspiration.

“It’s something that I wrote that she really liked, but it was definitely influenced by her experience,” Claude told S2S. We still had to ask if the song really was about Antwaun as so many have speculated. Claude said not exactly, explaining, “It was actually a culmination of just relationship woes period. There was never actually even a name that was thrown out there at all.”
From the highs to the lows, though, Fantasia was invested in showing all facets of her personality. Claude helped her show a more self-assured side when he penned Back To Me’s lead track “I’m Doing Me.”
“It’s kind of a declaration of her, like, looking out for herself more and putting herself first and making sure that she’s taken care of,” Claude said. “It has a little bit more of a bounce to it, so it’s not really a sad song. But the lyrics are her life.”
