The time has come again for our favorite fall line-ups. This year, we’ve got one more hot show to add to the mix.
If the teasers are any indication, “Hellcats” is going to be one hell of a show. Based on the dramas of collegiate competitive cheerleading, this show seems to have it all: humor, conflict and romance all tied up with a big bow of “ra-ra-shish-kum-bah!”
We chatted with Robbie Jones, who plays Lewis Flynn, an ex-football player who joins the squad to keep the scholarship money flowing. This is a return to the CW for Robbie after starring in “One Tree Hill” as Quentin, a rebellious basketball player who was killed off of the show during a tragic convenience store robbery.
Now, Robbie’s back as the male lead in this “cheer”-ful new show, and he was very excited about the challenges it’s brought his way.
“[Cheerleading] was an interesting challenge,” he said with a laugh. “But it’s been a whole lot of fun. I really respect what these cheerleaders are doing, because it’s so complicated and it’s such a unique skill set. They’re really talented athletes.” He even tried out his newfound cheer-cabulary on us, using words like “base” and “flyers,” which describe some of the positions that you’ll see on the sidelines and on the show.
As far as a look behind-the-scenes, Robbie says it’s a really great cast that he’s gotten to work with. While filming in Vancouver, Canada (cool, right?), he says he and castmates Alyson Michalka, Ashley Tisdale, Heather Hemmens, Matt Barr, Sharon Leal and more have gotten close because, “we’re our only friends!”
“We hang out together all the time. Everybody’s bonded really quick, and I think it’s showing on screen, too,” he said. “The connections that we all have and the chemistry that we’re developing is really coming across on the screen. It’s been great!”
We can’t wait ‘til the show starts to see that chemistry that he’s talking about. The fact that we’ll get to see a very athletic Mr. Jones doesn’t really hurt, either! Cheer on Robbie and the rest of the cast starting tomorrow when "Hellcats" premieres September 8 at 9 p.m. on CW.
