LisaRaye McCoy and Stacey Dash will become part of VH1 history with a scripted series from Queen Latifah.
The network has partnered with the Queen’s production company, Flavor Unit, for an hour-long dramedy titled “Single Ladies.” The series follows the lives and loves of three friends from Atlanta: Val, Keisha and April.
Stacey is set to play Val, a savvy fashion mogul on the come-up that’s looking for the Jay-Z to her Beyoncé. No doubt LisaRaye needs to get ready for the onslaught of snarkiness that’s sure to head her way when she makes her debut as Keisha, a gold-digging ex-video dancer. Charity Shea will play April, who seems to have the perfect marriage to the perfect man.
“Single Ladies” will be introduced as a movie early next before it’s spun-off into a series. The film was shot this summer, and production on the series will begin later this year.
This is VH1’s first step away from its tried and true reality TV format. This will be its first foray into scripted material.
“My partner Shakim and I are excited to collaborate with VH1, as they have a similar vision on how to bring this show to life. I think Single Ladies will really fill a hole in what is needed on television today,” Latifah said in a statement.
Singles Ladies, the movie and the series, are slated to debut in July 2011.
