Bishop responds to molestation suits

Bishop Eddie Long is legally disputing claims that he molested young men in his church.

More than a month after the Atlanta preacher was slammed with accusations that he lured several guys from his congregation into sexual relationships, Eddie said there is some truth to their allegations.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the bishop filed four responses that were each about 30 pages long. The court documents, filed Monday at DeKalb County State Court, admit that Eddie did take the young men on trips, but that’s not all.

Court documents state that "Bishop Long admits that he mentors many young men from challenged backgrounds who have often been without the benefit of a male role model."
And Eddie, the leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, said that while he did give his accusers money and lavish gifts, it was never done to coerce them into having sex with him.

On the topic of sex, the responses state, “The plantiff’s claims of sexual misconduct are not true.”

Eddie said that although it’s not uncommon for members of his congregation to call him “Daddy” or “Granddaddy,” he never required his accusers to do so.

New Birth has yet to file a response to the allegations, Eddie has requested a scheduling conference to talk about when the case might go to trial.
