Music insiders are discussing raunchy new videos by Keri Hilson and Raheem DeVaughn.
It takes a strong controversy to divide the music industry, but Keri and Raheem have managed to do just that with their sexually charged new videos.
In Keri’s “The Way You Love Me,” she wiggles and grinds while singing explicitly about sex, including a reference to her vagina while grinding. In Raheem’s “She’s Single,” the usually laid-back singer simulates oral sex, a range of sexual positions and displays partial nudity. The latter has even been banned from YouTube.
Check out the videos below to decide if you think the two stars crossed the line when it comes to their provocative images and lyrics.
While S2S attended celebrity photographer, Johnny Nunez’s party for his limited-edition New Era 59Fifty Cap, we asked some stars in the building for their reaction on the controversial clips. For VIBE Editorial Director Datwon Thomas, Keri’s bold video is only doing what a video should do: get people talking.
“That’s what videos are supposed to do to incite people whether positive or negative,” he said. “It’s good for her since everyone is talking. Janet [Jackson] and Madonna had theirs and now Keri has hers. I think in today’s time, it gets blown out because of social networking.”
For BET personality, Rocsi, Keri’s video is a form of self-expression that should be respected for its boldness.
“I think that it was a real bold move for her to jump out there,” Rocsi said. “At the end of the day, she’s an artist, and that’s the way she wanted to express herself for that song. So, let her rock out and do what she does.”
Still, not everyone is standing by Keri and Raheem. FUSE TV host and Hot 97 and Sirius/XM Satellite radio personality, Dee Vasquez, believes that both artists needed to be more conscious of the messages they are sending to youth.
“These artists have to be very careful with their audience. There are a lot of young people and a lot of aspiring artists,” Dee stated. “If we want to continue to promote positivity in our culture, we have to be mindful. I understand people want to be sexy, but there’s a way to be sexy without being salacious.”
