Aretha Franklin’s camp has revealed the reason why doctors told her take a break from performing.
ABC News reports that the Queen of Soul is battling pancreatic cancer. A family friend shared the news with WJBK FOX 2 News in Detroit, saying that although Aretha is doing “okay,” her loved ones are still “very concerned” about her.
Aretha herself has opted not comment on her health at this time, but those close to her are still asking fans to send their prayers and well wishes.
Last week the “Respect” diva went in for surgery for a then-undisclosed ailment. Neither Aretha nor her publicist would say what she was being treated for, but a statement saying the procedure was “successful” was released.
Aside from reports that Aretha is recovering at home, not much is known about her current condition.
There are no early warning signs for pancreatic cancer, which killed Patrick Swayze last year. According to the American Cancer Society, only about 20 percent of people with the disease survive for more than a year. The survival rate drops below four percent at the five-year mark.
