Officials in South Africa are urging people to remain calm while Nelson Mandela is in the hospital.

CNN.com reports that the African National Congress (ANC) is attempting to the put the public at ease after it was announced that the legendary South African leader was admitted to the hospital earlier this week. A rep for the political party assures that Nelson, known in the congress as Madiba, is fine as he just went in for some routine tests.

"It is a well-known fact that Madiba is 92-years-old and no longer a young man," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement. Nelson was vacationing in Cape Town when he had to be airlifted to a hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The ANC asked that the public and the media avoid speculating about the status of Nelson’s health. To keep South Africans from worrying too much, Jackson states that Nelson is "in no danger and is in good spirits."

"As South Africans, let us all allow doctors at the hospital to do their best in conducting tests on our elder statesman," Jackson stated. "We also wish to confirm that Madiba is well taken care of at the hospital."
