Michael Vick can get into Dallas anytime he wants after receiving a key to the city from a local official.
Mayor Tom Leppert said the presentation was unofficial, however, because it was made without his knowledge.
“The action taken was not sanctioned by my office and was not an official ceremonial honor on behalf of the city of Dallas," the mayor said.
Several residents of the city are upset about the presentation made by Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway.
Pet lovers, especially, question whether Michael deserves the honor, suggesting his past conviction on dog fighting charges make him an unlikely choice for such a gesture.
However, Dwaine defended his decision to honor Michael, stating that he was focusing on the NFL player’s turnaround since his release from prison.
“I gave it to him, sure I did,” the official said. “In the eyes of many people, he’s a hero.”
