Esperanza Spalding’s win brings haters

Justin Bieber fans aren’t taking his loss at the Grammys lightly: They’ve taken to social media to vent their frustration, and winner Esperanza Spalding is their target.

Justin was expected to win the Best New Artist trophy, but that honor went to jazz musician Esperanza, who has been receiving hate male via her Wikipedia page since her win.

One angry message read, "GO DIE IN A HOLE…WHO THE HECK ARE YOU ANYWAY?"

Another sarcastic comment noted Esperanza’s modest number of Twitter followers. "Congrats… on your 5069 followers."

That number has since jumped to 15,530, and she now has more than 72,000 fans on Facebook.

The negative messages have since been removed from Wikipedia.

It seems Justin is handling his loss with a bit more maturity than his fans. He was gracious on his Twitter wall Monday.

“As for the awards…of course I wanted to win. Its been & still is a dream to win a grammy. Was I upset…yes. But I was happy for her also,” he wrote.

Justin and Drake, the Young Money rapper, were competing with Esperanza in the Best New Artist category; although Esperanza and Drake were both making music prior to 2010.

Drake had little to say about his loss, tweeting, “Tonight I could have became something else…but I walked away and remain as myself.”

Of course, not everyone is upset about Esperanza’s win, which pleased some music lovers who appreciate artistry over popularity. The 67 moderated comments on her official site are all of congratulations and support.

One fan wrote, “Congrats on the win. Nice to see talent appreciated and not just fan hype. Keep on doing what you do best!”

Esperanza said, “I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination,” she said. “Me being a little old jazz musician and everything.”
