Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson’s new Animal Planet reality show, “Taking on Tyson,” is for the birds. Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson’s new Animal Planet reality show, “Taking on Tyson,” premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. (ET).
The series follows Mike as he introduces fans to the coop in New Jersey where his birds are kept and to the “sport” of pigeon racing.
“That was the first thing I ever loved in my life … a pigeon,” said Mike, who admits the first time he ever fought was when someone ripped the head off his pigeon.
“What we love about these pigeons is their loyalty. That’s what the connection is with them. They’re so much like people,” he said.
Mike first began raising pigeons at a young age after agreeing to help a neighbor clean a coop. He currently owns around 2,500 birds.
Although the pigeon raising is technically just a hobby, Tyson takes it about as seriously as he once did his boxing career.
“There’s no one who could even match me, and it’s the same way you feel about your birds. No one can match this bird. I’m willing to put my life on him,” he said. “It’s either all or nothing.”
