TV, music, film stars honored at Image Awards

Tyler Perry, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington and Willow Smith were among the winners at the 42nd annual NAACP Image Awards.

Tyler won the trophy for Outstanding Director for For Colored Girls, the movie that took home the Outstanding Motion Picture award.

“I wanted to take this iconic work and introduce it to people who had never heard of it. … There is nothing like having nine strong Black women holding you up,” Tyler said, referencing the star-studded cast that included Phylicia Rashad and Janet Jackson.

Halle beat out Janet, Kerry Washington, Queen Latifah and Zoe Saldana for the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture award for her role in the independent film Frankie and Alice. Halle, who received her award from Prince, was present to accept the honor and thanked the NAACP for helping to inspire her.

“If it were not for the NAACP, a little girl like me would not have had wind beneath her wings in a small town in Ohio,” Halle said. “I have never been more proud to be a Black woman.”

Denzel won the Best Actor award for his role in Book of Eli. Kimberly Elise won the Supporting Actress award for For Colored Girls. Samuel L. Jackson received the Outstanding Supporting Actor award for the movie Mother and Child.
