‘BBW’ isn’t what Shaunie expected

What the fans of “Basketball Wives” see on TV is totally different from what executive producer Shaunie O’Neal originally had in mind.

“The heart of my concept was a bunch of women that actually had businesses and were entrepreneurs and doing their own thing outside of their husband playing basketball–or fiancé or boyfriend or whatever–and kind of just highlighting that,” Shaunie told the hosts of “The Talk” Thursday.

“It has then turned into a whole ‘nother thing that I have no control of, but it makes great TV,” she said.

Acknowledging that fans of the show now tune in for the drama, Shaunie said it’s often hard for her to watch.

“I just don’t watch … Usually the day it comes on, I’m in the bathroom or in a closet, like, let me do some cleaning or something,” said Shaunie, who does see all the episodes before they air. “Before it comes on, I’ve already seen it. When it gets to the intense parts … I wanna reach in and save them.”

Shaunie said finding that balance between all her different roles with the show has been a struggle.

“It’s hard to be actual friends with some of the ladies and a cast member and a producer because a lot of times the production team won’t tell me things,” said Shaunie, who often has a different perspective on events than the show’s other producers. “I know she didn’t want to say that like that, or she didn’t mean it that way,” Shaunie said.

She also talked a bit about what to expect in season 3, which will be airing in June. Watch the video from “The Talk.”
