Bow Wow told us his role in Madea’s Big Happy Family was a no-brainer.
Bow Wow plays an ex-con named Byron, who is trying his best to deal with his incredibly ghetto baby mama Sabrina. Although they got along long enough to make a baby, those days are over and they can’t stand each other now.
"He hates her," Bow Wow told S2S with a laugh; his situation doesn’t get much better with his current lady love either. "[Sabrina’s] always there to pick on him, but then he has a girlfriend who is always there to stress him out. So, he’s kind of in a lose-lose situation."
Playing Byron’s cantankerous ex-girlfriend is Teyana Taylor; Bow Wow thinks the role of Sabrina came naturally to the singer-actress. "It was cool working with T, she’s like a little sister," Bow Wow said. "For the most part, she just really got to act like Teyana: ghetto as hell. She’ll probably kill me for saying that."
Although Bow Wow didn’t have the same luxury of just being himself on set, like Teyana, he didn’t have to work too hard to get into the role of Byron.
"I was watching Juice in my trailer when I was doing this movie; I was watching Poetic Justice in my trailer while I was doing this movie," said Bow Wow, explaining how he would get into character. "That’s it. I never prepare for roles; I just do them. I never think about anything; I just do it."
Bow Wow couldn’t really draw from personal experience for his part in the movie because he doesn’t know any couples like Byron and Teyana. And, he said, he’s in no rush to meet them, either!
But after playing Byron, who ultimately decides that it’s best he just be single and focus on his son, he’s really proud to see how the character grew up over the course of Madea’s Big Happy Family.
"He becomes a man right in front of your eyes. The whole movie I’m struggling with trying to do right," said Bow Wow. "I would have handled [his situation] just how he handled it. Once y’all see the movie you’ll understand exactly what I’m saying."
Getting into a Tyler Perry film is big deal in Black Hollywood, so when Bow Wow saw his opportunity to approach Tyler about a role, he took it.
"I walked up on Tyler at a Janet Jackson concert and basically told him straight up, like, ‘Yo, you gotta put me in your movie. I’m that next dude, man,’" the rapper recounted to S2S.
Bow Wow said Tyler was really cool about the impromptu casting call, and it didn’t take long for the rapper-actor to be contacted about a table read for the film. The rest, as they say is history.
