Toni Braxton said she was persuaded to do a reality show about her family after recognizing its dysfunction.
Tamar, the youngest sister, thought of the family-oriented reality show years ago, but Toni wasn’t on-board at first.
“She came to us with the idea about 2007, 2008, and of course, I was like, ‘No, we’re not doing it.’ One day my family was having Thanksgiving dinner. My parents are newly divorced after 35 years,” said Toni, adding that her parents don’t get along and her father has a new wife.
It was then Toni decided, “This should be on television. We have a story to tell because there are so many families that go through this and nobody talks about it,” she said.
“Whenever you do a reality show, you kind of go at it a bit,” Toni Braxton said, offering a glimpse of what’s to come on “Braxton Family Values.”
In addition to their parental issues and sibling rivalry, which Toni prefers to call “eagerness,” the ladies say the show will also offer fans a look at Trina Braxton’s struggle with alcohol.
“The DUI saved my life,” Trina said. “I was going in such a downward spiral. … My life was in such turmoil. I didn’t know what direction I was going in. Some people turned to food. I turned to alcohol, and I had too much to drink that particular night.”
In a show of support, Tamar said the none of the sisters ever get behind the wheel after having a drink.
The sisters also talk about their nicknames and Toni’s autistic son. Watch the clip below.
