Although she’s best known for her singing skills, Angie Stone is currently focused on another passion: acting.
“Acting was my first love. This was the direction I was going when I got discovered as a singer. Everything comes full circle back around. It’s coming back in this arena for me now,” said the co-star of the new play, Loving Him is Killing Me.
In the production, Angie’s third stage role, she plays Mutha. “I’m a nightclub singer with an attitude. The character’s a lot of fun. She’s hilarious. She’s the thread. She is the cause and the effect,” Angie told Sister 2 Sister, trying not to give away too much of the plot.
Loving Him is Killing Me is currently running in the Washington, D.C., area and co-stars Kenny Lattimore, Tyson Beckford, Christopher Williams and NeNe Leakes.
Speaking of NeNe, the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and “Celebrity Apprentice” star, Angie said she gets along fine with the often-embattled reality personality.
“Sometimes we get thrown under the bus. A lot of things happen for a lot of reasons. Some we can control and some we can’t. I can’t say what her relationship is with other people. I don’t have a problem with NeNe. She’s a go getter. She’s a winner. She’s always gonna shine ‘cause she knows the game. When you know the game too well, it gets thrown back at you at the wrong angle,” said Angie, who mentioned that NeNe was one of the first to use her glam squad.
“I have a glam squad I created, called First Class Glam: The Angie Stone Agency. I want to be the first Black artist to have a glam squad that’s for other people. It’s a lot brewing in my little camp,” said Angie, who’s also working on an album.
“[The album] should be out this fall. ‘Rich Girl’ is the first single,” and will be released this summer. Angie said actor Idris Elba is directing the video. “That’s my buddy. We’re very, very, very close. We’re very musically connected, and we’re friends as well,” she said before clarifying that their friendship is platonic.
Although things seems to be moving along smoothly for Angie, it wasn’t too long ago the songstress was in the news for being arrested.
“That was a big mess. They pulled me over on my way to church. I was trying to make the 8 o’clock service,” said Angie who admitted to doing 50 MPH in a 35 zone. “When they pulled me over for speeding, I didn’t have a problem with that. When he came back, he said, ‘Do you realize your license is suspended?’” Angie confirmed reports that she never received the notification to renew her license. In the end, the authorities apologized.
However, Angie’s not bitter at the cops who pulled her over or the media for making somewhat of a big deal out of nothing.
“I studied yellow journalism. Sometimes press is just that. It will either work for you or against you. I know my heart and intention,” she said.
With that behind her, Angie is moving forward full force in her career.
“My greatest work is still yet to come,” she said.
