First lady Michelle Obama delivered the commencement speech at Spelman University on Sunday.
The first lady reminded the ladies about the school’s founders and challenged the graduates to have that same spirit of fortitude and determination.
“We want the world to know the story … Back then, the thought of African-American women learning to read and write was to so many laughable at best and an impossibility at worst,” said Michelle, describing the racial climate of the era when the 130-year-old institute was first founded.
Michelle also encouraged the graduates to give back to the community once they’ve reached their goals.
“It is vitally important that you all rise to the highest ranks of every industry and every profession,” the first lady continued. “As you climb those career ladders, just remember to reach down and pull others up behind you.”
