Couple: Hines Ward & Kym Johnson
Dance: Argentine Tango
This week, Hines wasn’t the big deal in the ballroom. Well, he was, but the focus for many viewers was on his professional partner Kym. She suffered a serious neck injury on Friday while working on their Argentine Tango.
"Going into the semi-finals does change my strategy. We’re doing lifts that I have never done before," Kym said during a break in practice. "I’m feeling pretty good about this."
She should have known there would be trouble when Hines, who has no problem doing what it takes to win, questioned the dangerous moves. Eventually he went along with the program, though.
"Whatever tricks that we got, we want to pull them out to guarantee us a spot in the finals," Hines said. Yeah, that was about two seconds before he dropped Kym head-first onto the studio floor and fell on top of her.
The day ended on a pretty grim note, but all Kym could think about was the lost practice time. We think that dedication went a looong way to the top-notch Argentine Tango Hines and Kym did on Monday night.
Kym wisely decided to scrap the treacherous trick, but their routine was still a solid performance. Her legs never stopped moving and he was a strong base for all of her flair, as he should be. More than that, their attitude on the floor captivated us—we couldn’t look away.
This was arguably Hines and Kym’s best dance to date. And after their ordeal on Friday, it really puts the difficulty of these routines into perspective.
