Queen Latifah, LisaRaye preview ‘Single Ladies’

LisaRaye and Queen Latifah offer a sneak peek of what viewers can expect on the upcoming VH1 series “Single Ladies.”

Latifah, the series’ producer, describes it as “sort of a young, urban ‘Sex and the City’ with a little more color to it. We wanted to diversify a little bit, set it in Atlanta and give it more of a feel like that. We found a great group of people to cast in it … Everything just turned out really well.”

Despite rumors that there has been tension among some of the cast members, Latifah said she’s not aware of any backstage drama.

“I’m not on the set every day with them obviously, but from what I understand … it’s been really good,” said Latifah, who acknowledged that she’s found a bit of a niche when it comes to her scripted series.

“These words work well, and they usually do well on television,” she said in reference to her previous sitcom hit “Living Single” and the upcoming “Single Ladies.” “Why mess with something that’s working?” she asked.

LisaRaye McCoy, who plays Keisha on the series, said they’re all very proud of the project.

“At the end of the day we’re making a great product. We believe in the product. We’re very excited about it … We have creative differences sometimes, but we believe in what we’re doing, so that’s the bottom line,” said LisaRaye, who said she can relate to the series now that she’s single again.

“I’m trying not to be a single lady too much longer,” she said.

In contrast, LisaRaye’s character seems to be very comfortable living and enjoying the single life. “She plays a lot of games. Ultimately she wants to be loved, but she’s afraid,” LisaRaye said of her character Keisha.

LisaRaye, Stacie Dash and Lauren London aren’t the only stars slated for the premiere episode, airing Monday night. TLC’s Chilli and rappers Eve and Common will be making appearances.

“We got really talented young ladies, and some hot guys, too. There’s some testosterone to break up the estrogenogical monotony,” Latifah joked.

Queen Latifah will also be popping up as a newscaster on an episode of the show.

Latifah also talks about being a part of Oprah’s star-studded farewell event and her “30 Rock” role. Watch.
