McDonald’s denounces racist hoax

African Americans have to pay an extra $1.50 at Mickey D’s?! Wait before calling up McDonald’s headquarters or the NAACP. Many Twitter users were up in arms last weekend after the prank went viral using the hashtag #SeriouslyMcDonalds.

The posted picture showed a sign seemingly printed on McDonald’s letterhead that stated, “As an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies, African-American customers are now required to pay an additional fee of $1.50 per transaction.”

It was originally posted three years ago on an image-sharing website but gained momentum last week through Twitter.

Most people wised up to the hoax, however, after dialing the sign’s phone number. One person tweeted, “We called that 800 number you see at the bottom of the sign, and it connected to the KFC Customer Satisfaction Hotline.”

Fried chicken comments aside, Rick Wion, McDonald’s social media director said, “As a company and a brand we have a long and proud history of diversity inclusion across our system on both sides of the counter.”

Also, the McDonald’s official Twitter account tweeted, “That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax.”
