She may be married to a baller, but LaLa Vasquez doesn’t want to be defined by her relationship.
LaLa had her own thing going well before she and hubby Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks began dating. She started off as a VJ on MTV and her career took off from there. Now that she and her family have moved back to NYC, she’s readjusting to life on the East Coast.
During her reacclimation, she’s getting accustomed to a new title as some people have recently dubbed her The First Lady of New York. “I kind of laugh when people say it. It’s an honor to be called [The First Lady Of New York]," LaLa told Pynk magazine. "For people to even put us in the same category as Jay-Z and Beyoncé—that’s just an honor in itself, but I don’t deal well with titles."
For LaLa, being a New Yorker is all about getting involved in her community and getting out to give their time to a few good causes.
"You can be given a label and a title but what does that mean when there is nothing behind it? So for us, it’s about really embracing the city of New York," she reasoned. "We kind of rushed and got here quickly, but now that we are settling in we’re starting to get out there and do some charity work and let people really see what we’re about as individuals, and as a couple.”
Another title she’s not doing so well with is basketball wife. Not that she doesn’t love her husband, but she’s got no plans on capitalizing on their marriage. And she’s still got no plans on joining "Basketball Wives."
“I was offered a spot on the show. I turned it down," LaLa said. "I pride myself in being more than just a basketball wife."
She adds, "That’s not a title that I want to define me. I’d rather be known as a mom, a businesswoman, a producer, an actress, a TV host.”
Besides, who needs "Basketball Wives," when she and Carmelo have their own show? "LaLa’s Full Court Life" is set to debut on VH1 later this summer.
