Sister 2 Sister started out the weekend at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for ASCAP’s Rhythm & Soul Awards. We were fashionably late but got there just in time to catch Diddy walking down the red carpet. Diddy, the Founder’s Award Recipient for this year’s ASCAP Awards, was not in media mode, as videographers were admonished by security against filming him. We hurried to our seats as Miguel was performing “Sure Thing,” which is one of Jamie’s favorites. Gospel dynamos Mary Mary received ASCAP’s Golden Note Award, shouting out singer Deniece Williams, who they say inspired them in their career. We watched another incredible performance as Andrea Martin, a relative unknown outside the music industry, gave a soul-stirring performance of Melanie Fiona’s “It Kills Me,” a song that she wrote for Melanie. After we ate a delicious plate of chicken and asparagus, we headed back to our hotel to get ready for a busy Saturday.
