Steve Harvey has had enough of Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West bashing President Barack Obama.
The comedian went off during a broadcast of "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" earlier this week after the pair began its 15-city Poverty Tour launched to bring attention to the poor and address issues the president is supposedly overlooking.
"It would be nice to hear the president say the word ‘poor,’ to say the word ‘poverty.’ We get conversations about the middle class. Well, the new poor are the former middle class. But we can’t get this president or any leaders to say the words ‘poor’ or ‘poverty,’ much less do anything about it," Tavis said when the tour was launched in July.
Steve questioned the motivation for such an expedition, arguing that they weren’t trying to call attention to the crushing financial problems plaguing the Black community so much as trying to grab some shine for themselves.
"Poverty existed before January 20, . It existed; where was your damn bus then?" Steve said, arguing that this tour is two terms too late and should have started when President George W. Bush was in office. "It’s called a recession now, Tavis, and it started eight years ago when they started rescinding all of the good things that President Clinton had done."
Steve was noticeably fired up while expressing his frustration at Cornel and Tavis’ lack of support for the president. In Steve’s opinion, the other men are letting their egos get in the way.
“I was a huge fan of Cornel West,” he said. “[But] Tavis, I seen him coming a mile away. Tavis Smiley’s anger started when he was having a town hall meeting. President Obama was supposed to come. He couldn’t come because of the campaign trail, and he sent Mrs. Obama. [Tavis] has held that grudge ever since.”
Supposedly, Cornel is upset with President Obama because he wasn’t invited to the inauguration.
Although Steve didn’t come out and directly label them Uncle Toms, he did offer a strikingly similar description of them while advertising UTLO.org. The name of the fictional site stands for "Uncle Tom look out."
Steve also wondered aloud about the funding for the Poverty Tour, suggesting that perhaps the money could be coming from some of President Obama’s detractors.
"I want to know this: Is anybody paying you, and where are you getting the money for these buses?" the comedian asked. "I just really can’t see you digging into your pocket for the love and welfare of poor people."
The radio host also shot down Tavis’ proposal that the president call a days-long summit on poverty, stating,"Who in the hell got two-three days for your a*$? I ain’t got time to sit down with your monkey behind for no two-three damn days, let alone the president."
